Purpose of this site

These pages describe, in general terms, how tree work is carried out and how trees fail: what pruning can and cannot achieve, how decay and root problems show themselves, the particular ways thin soil over limestone, summer drought and winter ice act on trees in southwest Missouri, and the usual order of operations for the work. The site also connects property owners around Springfield with a tree care contractor working the area.

General information, not a diagnosis

Nothing here is an assessment of any particular tree. A tree cannot be judged from a page, a photograph or a description, because what matters most is how much sound wood remains, what is happening at the base and the buttress roots, and what the tree can reach if it fails. Those are questions answered by somebody standing at the trunk.

Nothing here is legal opinion, and nothing here indicates how a given city, county or homeowners association will treat a given property or a given tree. Rules on removal, on trees in the public right of way, and on clearing and open burning differ from place to place, and the authority having jurisdiction is the only authority on its own rules. Do not substitute anything written here for an inspection of your own trees or for advice from a specialist engaged on your property.

Safety

Several pages describe conditions that are genuinely dangerous, including trees under tension, limbs lodged in a crown, trees resting on a structure, and anything in contact with an overhead electric line. Those descriptions exist to help a property owner recognize a hazard and stay away from it, not to guide anyone through the work. Treat every downed line as live and contact the utility.

The absence of pricing

No page here states a price and no price should be read into anything on the site. Cost is determined by the contractor once the tree has been seen, because that is the earliest point at which the question has a real answer.

Corrections

These pages are written with care and reviewed, but conditions shift and errors survive review. Report one and it will be corrected.
